Boot Hill in Dodge City

On our way home from Levi's parents, we decided to drive through Dodge City and stop at the Boot Hill museum. It's a recreation of the old cowboy town where Wyatt Earp battled it out. We started off by watching a video about the fights between the cowboys and the Indians. I told Wyatt that there was a cowboy named Wyatt and through the whole video, he kept saying, "'That cowboy Wy-tet? That him?" (I love how he says his own name!!) Then we toured the jail, the artifact museum, then to the old downtown. In the downtown area, they had a General Store, Saloon, Gun Museum, and a bunch of recreations of doctors offices, barber shops, homes, schools, churches, etc.
We stopped into the saloon to get an old fashioned root beer. And for some reason, Grant was petrified of the place. It was a little overwhelming, I must say. A piano playing, two bar girls waiting in full gear when we walked in, and the bartender (who also happened to be the town marshal) who was pretty big and boisterous. He asked Grant if he wanted a root beer, which pretty much led Grant running for the doors. But we made Grant sit down with us while we enjoyed a root beer. The marshal came over and asked Grant if he'd ever been arrested, and since Grant said no, the marshal said he could be an official sheriff. So he had Grant stand up, take an oath, and pinned his badge on! It was so cute and Grant was soooo proud! He gave Wyatt a badge too, and for the rest of the day, Wyatt would say, "I police Wy-tet!"
After we made the rounds downtown, we checked out the steam engine and then we headed back into the gift shop where the kids picked out a tiny treat- a toy gun and a candy stick! It was a fun little adventure and I'm glad we stopped. Grant said, "I think I want to be a cowboy when I grow up!"
